8. Serjeant Edward BELLASIS [scrapbook] was born in 1800 in Basildon, Berkshire. He died on 24 Jan 1873 in Hyères. Edward married Elizabeth Jane GARNETT "Eliza". [Parents]

Mr Serjeant Edward Bellasis converted to the Roman Catholic Church on 28 December 1850. this was soon after his close friend, James Hope-Scott QC, also a leading Barrister, converted. A third close friend was Edward Badeley, who, on 12 July 1844, acted as Bellasis' "colt", or assistant, at his investiture as "Serjeant-in-Law" (normally referred to as Serjeant-at-Law, and this Serjeant was one of the last).  Through his contribution to the Tractarian Movement at Oxford, he entered into discussions and correspondence with St John Henry Cardinal Newman, who held the Serjeant up as an example for others in their search for the Truth.  Together they established a lay school for Roman Catholic boys at the Birmingham Oratory; no doubt with some input from Blessed Dominic Barberi, who received Newman into the church and has been referred to as "the Apostle of England" for his instigation of parishes and schools.  The Serjeant's chambers in Victoria Street, Westminster, were used for the preliminary planning; and the Serjeant's two eldest sons were the first in school, and two sons became Oratorian Fathers.  For more information, read the Memorials of Mr Serjeant Bellasis by his son Edward, Lancaster Herald.
