Descendants of Thomson

Second Generation

3. Alexander "Greek" THOMSON [scrapbook] (John ) was born on 9 Apr 1817 in Endrick Cottage, Balfron, Stirlingshire. He died on 22 Mar 1875 in Glasgow.

Alexander started out in Law but was persuaded to use his drawing skills for architecture.  He became known as 'Greek' Thomson because of his use of greek designs in some of the churches, houses and civic buildings in Glasgow. The city has much to say about him but has failed to maintain many of his buildings. The Balfron Heritage Group describe his background well at http://www.balfronheritage.org.uk/alexander. They do not confirm the names of his children and an assumption has been made that he is the father of Dr William Thomson.  Mona Frame-Thomson used to talk about her great-grandfather, Greek Thomson.  It is most likely that Alexander named his first son William, after the brother that was like a father to him and his siblings.  The family background gives credence to his son, Dr William, leading the life of a missionery.

He had the following children.

+ 4 M i Dr William Cooper THOMSON.
