He died on 9 Sep 1963 in St John's Hospital, London.

Gold Staff Officer at the Coronation of King George VI

Dick finished his schooling at Downside and began studying to be an Engineer at the Camborne School of Mines in Cornwall.  From letters, Dick left for Rhodesia in 1905 with his brother Bill, but returned to England in 1906 and continued his studies at Camborne.  After qualifying in 1908, he left for Australia with only £10.  He worked at Broken Hill, mining zinc; then at Koolgardy (near Kalgoorly) surveying for gold.  He later joined his brothers mining for gold near Bulawayo and Queque in Southern Rhodesia.  Dick then went to Kenya, where he initially surveyed for gold and had a moment of triumph when he struck quite a valuable gold seam at Kakamega.

In 1914, he enlisted in the East African Mounted Rifles to fight in the 1st World War as a munitions supplier taking ammunition to the front line with bullock and cart.  Upon completing his deliveries, he was required to join in the fighting.  He helped to chase the Germans out of East Africa down to Mozambique.  He was twice mentioned in despatches and promoted to Second Lieutenant.

For a while, Dick took up Bill's role running the Doondu coffee estate as a working partner for the Dormers.  On dissolution of the partnership, he bought 500 acres of scrub land at Rioki and started his own coffee farm from scratch in 1924.  He had to fight off lions and other game and re-plant the entire plantation three times due to various deseases affecting the trees. By 1941, he had 150 acres under coffee.

The neighbouring Lioki mission was established by Italian missionaries and Dick gave them several more acres to develop a school, a clinic and a convent.  The Holy Ghost Fathers took over the mission, which is deemed to be one of the most successful in Kenya.  The St Anne's School for girls is doing very well and still growing.  There is also a strong Roman Catholic youth movement there.

Despite the distance from and slow travel to England, Dick kept in touch with  friends and family back 'home', eventually marrying at the age of 48 his bride of 25.

The farm was sold after Dick's death to a co-operative of 3,000 local people for two thirds of the asking price.  This was the right thing to do for those Kikuyus who defended the family against their own kind during the Maou Maou Rebellion of 1952.  The Rioki Estate has been replacing trees by grafting onto the original root stock, and the trees now have an immunity to the deseases against which Dick had to spray.  The farm is organic.

Dick married Mona Florita FRAME-THOMSON, daughter of Thomas FRAME THOMSON "Trams" and Florence Mary MCCLYMONT "Flossy", on 25 Apr 1934 in Farm St, London. Mona was born on 26 Feb 1909 in Holland Park, London. She died on 29 Feb 1984 in Fulham, London.

They had the following children.

  31 M i William Thomas Joseph BELLASIS.
32 F ii Mary Susan BELLASIS.
33 F iii Anne Margaret Mary "Anna" BELLASIS.

Anna married Colin Charles FIRMIN "Col" [scrapbook]. Col was born on 11 Apr 1940. He died on 3 Mar 2013 in Buddina, Queensland, Australia.

He grew up near Perth and later settled in Darwin selling insurance policies.  This he passed to Anna whilst he entered politics.

He served as an Alderman for the City of Darwin from 1976 to 1983 before his pre-selection by the ruling Country Liberal Party (CLP) for the Electoral Division of Ludmilla in the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly and his subsequent election at the 1983 Northern Territory election. As the children progressed, they decided to move to the east coast.  Col was a very keen sailer, owner of Brumby-Jack, and so they joined the marina fraternity at Buddina, near Mooloolaba.  Col took part in ocean racing, including the South China Sea, and Sydney to Hobart.  He got his Mate's Certificate to take guided tours into the crocodile region on the north coast.  He and Anna would go on long expeditions to the Solomon Islands and Phuket and many other destinations.

Col was a key player in the Legacy charity for veteren servicemen.  He was a vintage rally enthusiast, maintaining two of his own: an MG sport and a Triumph automatic.

They had the following children.

  36 M i
Robin Victor MONTGOMERIE-CHARRINGTON was born on 23 Jun 1915 in Mayfair, London. He died on 3 Apr 2007 in Evenlode, Gloucestershire.

Robin was christened Robin Victor Montgomerie. He was educated at Eton. After World War II, he was manager of the airport at Kidlington, Oxfordshire (Oxford Airport). At that time, Oxford was busier then Heathrow (and is now on the rise again and being called London-Oxford). He took up 500cc Formula 3 motor racing in 1950 through to 1951 (when Bernard Charles Ecclestone was doing the same thing before moving on to a business level in motor racing). Robin then drove an Aston-Butterworth Formula 1 car in the World Championship Grand Prix on 22 June 1952 at Chimay but had to retire with engine trouble. The car was produced out of the partnership of Bill Aston and Archie Butterworth. The enterprise could not meet the expenses arising from the F1 Regulations of 1954. He later moved to the States before retiring in England and taking up sailing.
